My favorite part of my master's research project was seeing a world which would otherwise be invisible to me. I created these pieces to show how I gather microscope images of tomato flower buds, and what they can reveal. A fluorescent stain labels the plant cell walls, emitting light from within the structure of the plant. I love this representation of light shining in the darkness, science illuminating the unknown. The camera on the microscope can translate the fluorescence into any color, but I choose turquoise both for its clarity, so the image is easy to see and has enough contrast, as well as for its beauty. I added paintings in gold on top of the microscope images to offer abstract representations of light, focus, and magnification that are so important for working with microscopes.
